Faith-based groups and places of worship play a major role in the lives of many children and young people in the District. This means safeguarding must be a key consideration in all faith settings.
We look at how to approach safeguarding from within the beliefs, teachings and cultural context of faith communities.
Bradford Council Diversity and Cohesion Service
Bradford Council’s diversity and cohesion service is to be recognised nationally for its work in promoting safeguarding and community cohesion within the district’s supplementary schools.
Diversity and Cohesion takes responsibility for promoting race equality, diversity and community cohesion through education. This includes:
- provision of continuing professional development in citizenship and community cohesion, race equality and religious and cultural diversity for teachers
- curriculum support and development
- monitoring and reporting racial harassment
- support for supplementary schools
- the implementation of the Race Relations Amendment Act, The UK Equality Act 2010, The Schools White Paper 2010 and Ofsted Inspection Proposals for 2012
Strengthening Faith Institutions Booklet
Bradford Council in partnership with the Faiths Forum for London and Bradford Council for Mosques have team up together to launch the Strengthening Faith Institutions (SFI) programme. This is a pilot scheme that aims to support places of worship in Bradford and district by conducting an organisational ‘health-check’ on areas such as: policy, governance, finance, safeguarding, access, and equality.
Over fifty places of worship will be covered in this pilot phase, starting with an emphasis on self-assessment and working with a consultant to guide each organisation through the health-check and follow-up.
Further support, training and signposting to institutions in order to improve effectiveness and long-term sustainability of places of worship to keep them resilient and safe will be provided by Bradford Council.
This service is provided for any place of worship that could benefit from a robust health-check with a focus on harder to reach and more isolated communities who could use further support with community cohesion.
